Special Projects:

CMURM and RMS Titanic, Inc. launch the next phase of the Titanic Mapping Project
CMURM is collaborating with RMS Titanic, Inc. (https://rmstitanicinc.com) and Michigan State University (https://rsgis.msu.edu) to complete Phase 2 of the Titanic Mapping Project. The Titanic Mapping Project was initiated in 2006 with Paul-Henri (PH) Nargeolet and Kenneth Vrana as co-directors. The initial phases of research are summarized in the peer-reviewed article titled, Mapping RMS Titanic With GIS: Implications for Forensic Investigations (Marine Technology Journal 46:6, 2012) and in the National Geographic Society documentary titled, Drain the Titanic, released in 2015.

Research Opportunities:

Historical and Archaeological Investigations of the Great Lakes Pound Net Fishery

CMURM’s 2013-2014 research at site 20UM723 (see Projects webpage) revealed the need for a systematic study of the history and archaeology of the Great Lakes pound net fishery. While numerous published documents exist, including data from the 19th century, no single research has brought this data together with a systematic analysis of the attributes of pound net stakes.
Such research has the potential to shed light on the chronological and local evolution of the industry, as well as on ethnic affiliations, that began in the Great Lakes around 1850 and disappeared within about a century. Contact CMURM director Misty Jackson if you are interested in furthering this realm of research.
